News Andy and Gang of Four singer Jon King are currently writing and recording their new album in Andy’s studio in London with Mark Heaney on drums and Thomas McNeice on bass. G04 released their critically acclaimed single “Second Life” last summer and performed dates in Europe and America. Get all the latest G04 news here. The Brownies The interplay of the two guitars in a spiky dialogue instantly attracted Andy to working with the band. Nathan’s guitar has a riposte for every riff by Stevie or Maxi. Another key to getting the best out of the Brownies’ sound, says Andy, was to encourage singer Soaphie to use her fantastically character-full voice as expressively as possible, in its full range from sweet to almost animalistic, against the pounding rhythms created by Michael J. Sheils on drums. Andy worked with Michael to push up the full-on drum sound while refining the drumbeats. The end result was very poppy, punky: very hooky. A long-term fan of Gang of Four, Andy C was also impressed by Andy G’s production on Killing Joke and Jesus Lizard. He was looking with the band’s 11th album to move Therapy? away from the purely heavy rock sound they’ve been identified with while continuing the band’s tradition of experimentation at the sonic periphery. Andy G listened to the new material and was interested with the direction the music was taking, in particular the influence of Dubstep on their sound. Producing the Basque band We are Standard was a nightmare, at least in one respect: how would Andy and the band stop eating, drinking and taking siestas long enough to finish the project? During the first phase, at a studio in Bilbao, the band were keen to demonstrate that the Basque country is Spain’s gastronomic heartland. Andy became intimately acquainted with the joys of raciones (like tapas) and chuleton – the local form of T-bone steak. When Viva Gloria contacted Andy from Zagreb, they asked him to produce their album. His commitments wouldn’t allow him to do the whole recording so he agreed to mix instead and travelled to Zagreb at the start of recording to explain how they should go about it. Once the recording was finished, lead guy Damir came to London to sit in on the mix in Andy’s studio. The music is extraordinary; powerful, hypnotic grooves built around unusual time signatures. Sun 2008 was Croatia year. By coincidence, another band contacted Andy from Zagreb, this time asking Andy to mix three tracks they had recorded in New York. Sun rises and sets around two amazing vocalists, Struya and Nick, who are multitalented musicians and songwriters. |
Recent YearsASYLAndy spent five weeks last year in the studio with French punk band Asyl making the smokey, sweaty, passionate music that garnered their debut album much praise on release last year. The band consists of two brothers, Nico and Benji, guitar and drums, who buck the stereotype of battling brothers in bands. They are joined by Antoine on bass and Mathieu, vocals. Collectively they couldn't look more French - cigarettes permanently lit, skinny frames in skinny jeans - and during their time in London and especially London's most ancient pub, Ye Olde Mitre, the studio local, they worked hard at rekindling the auld alliance, befriending the Scottish landlord and eating a lot of Scotch eggs. The Young KnivesA CD turned up one day, sent by the young knives management. Musically intriguing and haunting, playful but taught, full of dark humour. Cool, strange riffs, inside out drum beats. The band was unsigned, but Andy went in and recorded four tracks in November 2004. This was soon released on Transgressive. Further sessions followed, the final recordings of ‘ Voices of Animals and Men ‘ took place in march 2006 and was released some months later on Warner / Transgressive.
Killing JokeThe killing joke record commenced in May 2002 with andy producing and co-writing with Jazz, Geordie and Youth. Andy programmed the beats for the record, the idea being that at the end they would be replaced with real drums. A total of 13 tracks were completed by November, including a new definitive, version of the track 'wardance'. John, the drummer from System of a Down, played on 3 tracks in LA, just before Christmas. Then Dave Grohl requested that he play drums on the entire record. Due to the Foo Fighters touring commitments the drum session had to wait till march. It then took place in LA, at GrandMaster studios. Mixing was completed in April. The record was engineered by Andy and regular co-engineer Jerry Kandiah. It was released August 2003.
The 13 tracks: Total Invasion, The Death and Resurrection Show, Asteroid, Implant, Blood On Your Hands, Loose Cannon, You'll Never Get To Me, Red Sky, Dark Forces, Inferno, House That Pain Built, Wardance, Zennen. The FutureheadsThe first album is now finished and released. Recording took place in Andy's studio in several sessions and at various times, beginning in November 2002 and continuing through 2003. The first 4 track EP was released in March 2003 with the songs 'Picture of Dorian Grey', 'Cabaret', 'Carnival Kids' and 'Ticket'. It received 5 star reviews throughout the music and national press. The next single 'First Day', was released in August. In the same week that 'First Day', was the national number one independant single, Killing Joke had the national number one independant album. The video for the download only single, 'A to B', reached 3 in the MTV2 NME chart . |
